Mulund residents suffer due to haphazard parking on streets

Illegal parking

Birju Mundra, who has been living in Mulund for the last two decades has seen how narrow internal roads have, over a period, been used for illegal parking. With his strong follow up with various agencies, he managed to get rid of illegal parking in V P Road in Mulund West.

However, there are many roads in Mulund that are marred with illegal parking. Bhakti Marg, Mulund Colony, Pandit Din Dayal Uppdhay marg, LBS Marg, M G Road, Netaji Subhash Chandra Road, Madan Mohan Malviya, Jawahar Lal Nehru Road and R P Road among others are having double parking issues. Shulabh Jain, a social worker in Mulund says that illegal parking is rampant in the suburb. "Though the civic body has designated some roads as a public parking lot, these places are often seen lying empty," said Jain.

The west side of Mulund station is an example where auto rickshaws are parked, choking almost two lanes of the road. "MG Road and Netaji Subhash Chandra Road are near the railway station and many people park their vehicles along the road and go to different places in Mumbai," said Parth Shah, a resident of R P Road.

Many residents echoed that there is a rampant violation by auto rickshaw across Mulund. "Both East and West sides have had issues of parking for a long time," said Rawal Shah, who owns a cloth shop along Moti Nagar road. It is either at the railway station in the west or the LBS Marg and even the stretches of Eastern Express Highway in the east, there is rampant illegal parking by auto rickshaws. "In some roads, the queue of auto rickshaws is so long that people can not even cross the road," said Jain.

Kishore Gandhi, assistant commissioner of T ward said that there is no major parking lot available near the station. "There will be no immediate respite near the railway station," said Gandhi. "If there is any double parking issue in the same lane, it is the traffic department's responsibility to take action," said Gandhi.
