GREATER NOIDA: In a tragic end to a teenage love story, a boy and a girl who studied together in a school till two years ago hanged themselves from the grille of another private school in Chak Birampur village in Rabupura on Saturday afternoon.

The 18-year-old boy and the 16-year-old girl, who belonged to different castes, were shattered that the their families disapproved of their relationship, police said. The committed suicide in the secluded premises of a school on Saturday. The two were found hanging from the grille of a ventilator at Oxford Public School in Chak Birampur.

According to their relatives, the two had known each other for years as the boy was in Class X and the girl in Class IX in the same school till one and a half years ago. Later, they joined different inter-colleges but continued their friendship. On Saturday, the boy had left his house on his blue-black Splendor around 8am.

By around 12.30pm, the families of the boy and the girl got to know from villagers that they had committed suicide at the school. They rushed to the spot from their respective villages—Bhikanpur and Tanaja—both of which are in Rabupura.

The sight bewildered the villagers—the boy in casuals and the girl still in her blue-white uniform of salwar kameez and black sweater—hanging from two different dupattas. “It seems they had planned it earlier. The girl had left for her school as usual. The boy was seen moving around Oxford Public School since morning,” said a villager.

According to police, the boy seems to have picked up the girl on way to school and the two travelled to the spot on his bike. “His bike was found parked outside the backside wall of the school. The wall is about 4.5 feet high and it seems they jumped inside the school,” SHO, Rabupura, Sunil Singh told TOI.

Onlookers said the duo seemed to have used the benches to tie the noose to the ventilator’s grille.

One of the relatives said though the two studied together, the boy was shifted to another school when their relationship became public. While the girl was from the Tyagi community, the boy belonged to the Jat community.

“This happened about one and a half years ago. News about their relationship reached the school too. The boy also fought with a teacher over the issue and the fight was discussed in the panchayat as well. It was decided that the boy be shifted to another school,” the relative said.

While the two were apparently upset over the change of schools, it was the boy’s impending wedding that could have possibly triggered the suicide, said a relative.

“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” the SHO said.
