CHENNAI: In a tragic tale that testifies to the undying love of a mother, a 38-year-old woman in the city, who was fatally attacked by her mentally ill son, pleaded with police to give him clemency on deathbed and refused to give a dying declaration against him.

On December 29, 2018, the woman suffered a brutal assault at her son's hand for trying to stop him from smashing a wall clock. Though the Adambakam police learned the sequence of events by questioning witnesses, the mother kept telling them that she had an accidental fall and defended her son.

After the man's father died six years ago, he was lodged at a private home at Paraniputhur in Iyyappanthangal . His mother too stayed there to take care of him. As the home was closed for Christmas vacation, the mother took him to his sister's home at Yadava Street in Adambakkam, where the tragedy took place.

"On the fateful day, the mother forgot to give him his medication, and he turned violent," said an investigating officer. She chided him for attempting to break the clock in a fit of rage, and he pushed her violently against the wall.

Hearing her cry, neighbours and daughter rescued the woman. Though she did not have any bleeding injuries and appeared normal on the first day, her pain became unbearable on the second day and she was admitted to the Royapettah government hospital. She was later moved to the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital where she underwent a surgery. She died on Friday.

"When we questioned the woman at the hospital, she did not disclose the fight part. She told us that her health condition had gone from bad to worse because of her liver ailment," said an officer. However, when the police confronted her with their inquiry details, she pleaded with them to spare her ill son.

Police have sent her body for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death. A case of accidental death has been registered, but appropriate penal provisions would be included once the autopsy report is out, police sources said.
