‘Pass and fail’ return to classes V, VIII

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat is all set to implement the revocation of ‘no detention policy’ in class 5 and 8 from academic year 2019-20 after an amendment to this effect got the nod from the Rajya Sabha. In fact, the state is all set to advocate to Union HRD ministry that states should be allowed to follow the exam and promote on basis of performance in class 3 as well.
Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said Gujarat was the first to object to UPA government's provision of not detaining students in classes 1-8 under the Right To Education Act when the NDA government assumed power in 2014. “The no-detention policy had adversely impacted the quality of education,” said Chudasama. Chudasama said that he will represent to HRD minister Prakash Javdekar that the no-detention policy should be extended to class 3 as well.
Chudasama said that a meeting with top education department officials will be held to decide the implement the no detention amendment in the act.
