Day 2 Review: Faf du Plessis' ninth century, and Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock's solid fifties propelled South Africa to a commanding position on Day 2 of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands on Friday (January 4).

Du Plessis (103) and Bavuma (75) added 156 runs for the fifth wicket, a stand that has threatened to take the game away from the visiting side. South Africa, who bowled Pakistan out for 177 in their first innings, were 382 for 6 in 116 overs, leading by 205 runs, with de Kock and Vernon Philander unbeaten on 55 and 6 respectively.

Resuming the day on 123 for 2, Hashim Amla could not add to his overnight score of 24 and was bowled by a delivery from Mohammad Abbas which snaked back off the pitch to hit his leg stump. Meanwhile, Theunis de Bruyn played a loose drive and was caught at gully off Shaheen Afridi after scoring just 13.

The home team lost two wickets in the opening session and could only manage 65 runs in 27 overs against some accurate bowling. That's when du Plessis and Bavuma took over and ensured that Pakistan does not get any opportunity of making a comeback in the match.

Bavuma, however, appeared to have been caught by Azhar Ali at first slip off Abbas when he was on three and the total was 156 for 4. On-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson conferred and asked television umpire S Ravi to check whether the ball hit the ground before a clean catch was completed. Oxenford gave a "soft" signal of "out". After looking at numerous replays Ravi overturned the on-field decision because it appeared the ball had touched the ground.

The incident was similar to one at a critical stage of the first Test in Centurion, also involving Azhar Ali, when Dean Elgar survived against Shaheen Afridi after Wilson reversed the on-field decision. A consensus of television commentators was that there was no conclusive evidence to justify Wilson’s decision. Pakistan went onto lose the match by six wickets and give South Africa a 1-0 lead in the series.

Meanwhile, du Plessis, who was out for a "pair" in the last encounter, took some time to settle in before crafting a couple of drives to get going. Both Mohammad Amir and Abbas looked far from their best and mostly operated around 130 kmph. The two batsmen cashed in on most of the bad deliveries and kept the scoreboard moving.

In the process, Bavuma brought up his 13th Test fifty but couldn't convert it into a century as he edged one of Shaheen's delivery to the wicketkeeper. Coming in at No. 7, Quinton de Kock commenced his innings with a couple of cheeky boundaries.

Du Plessis was dropped on 96 by Sarfraz Ahmed before the South African got his hundred with a cover drive. His innings finally came to an end in 109th over when he became Shaheen's third victim, nicking one to the wicketkeeper. The 34-year-old struck 13 fours during his stay in the middle.

Meanwhile, boundaries kept coming off de Kock's willow as the wicketkeeper-batsman went past 2000 runs in Tests. The left-hander brought up his 14th half-century few overs before the curtains were drawn on Day 2.

Commentary (Pakistan innings)

The question is how long on Day 4? A session? That is what I believe. Also, another question is, can South Africa win with 10 wickets in the bag or will Pakistan make them work for the runs they need? All these questions will be answered on Sunday at 1030 local (0830 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!

Earlier in the day, the South Africans swelled their lead to 254 before being bundled out. Then they managed to pick a couple of wickets after Lunch. An innings defeat looked certain but then, Asad Shafiq and Shan Masood showed great character. The two added 132 runs and let me tell you, the partnership was a very entertaining one. However, once the two departed, nobody except for Babar Azam showed some fight. A cluster of wickets in the last session more or less seals the deal for the hosts.

7 wickets is what fell in the last session! Asad Shafiq was the first one to go early after the break. Then the procession began and Dale Steyn was the tormentor-in-chief. He bagged a four-fer and at one stage an innings defeat looked on the cards. However, a fighting knock by Babar Azam ensured that Pakistan take the lead. They would have liked a bigger one but credit to the fight they showed. They did not surrender and managed to avoid an innings defeat.

So after a discussion between Faf du Plessis and the umpires, we see Elgar walk back slowly towards the dressing room. De Kock too is taking his own time to get there which means PLAY WON'T BE EXTENDED. There will be a Day 4 and South Africa will come out to bat with a target of 41 in front of them.

70.4 K Rabada to Afridi, OUT! That's the final wicket down for the visitors. Back of a length ball in line of the stumps, Afridi backs away, swings hard across the line and the ball takes a big top edge. It skies towards mid-wicket where Philander comes running from mid on and takes it safely. Pakistan are bowled out for 294. A TARGET OF 41 is set for South Africa. 294/10

70.3 K Rabada to Afridi, Hits this through the covers and gets two runs for it. 294/9

70.2 K Rabada to Afridi, Low full toss just outside off, Afridi reaches out to play at it but gets a bottom edge which goes past the stumps. 292/9

70.1 K Rabada to Abbas, High full toss on off stump, pushed to the cover area for a single. 292/9

Kagiso Rabada returns. This will be the last over of the day.

69.6 D Steyn to Afridi, Length ball around off, a play and a miss from the batsman. 291/9

69.5 Steyn to Afridi, SIX! That's a shot any batsman would be proud of. Holds the pose for the cameras too. Full and in the slot, Afridi lofts it straight back over the bowler's head for a biggie. 291/9

69.3 D Steyn to Afridi, In the air and it's safe! Afridi clears his front leg and looks to go big over the leg side. Gets a big top edge and it skies in the mid-wicket area. Olivier there runs behind as the ball comes over his shoulders, dives but can't get his hands to it. Always a difficult one. Two runs taken. 285/9

69.2 D Steyn to Afridi, THAT'S NASTY! Afridi falls to the ground. Extremely fierce and sharp from Steyn. Short ball on leg, Afridi looks to duck out of the way but is struck on the helmet. Luckily, no damage done. But what a ball! 283/9

69.1 D Steyn to Afridi, Edged and FOUR! Short ball banged in, Afridi swings and gets it off the top edge. It flies over the keeper's head and races away to the boundary line behind. 283/9

68.6 V Philander to Abbas, Length delivery around off, kept out from inside the crease. 279/9

68.6 Philander to M Abbas, NOT OUT! Philander has overstepped. Oh, how unfortunate for him and South Africa. Fuller length ball, Abbas backs a long way away and swings hard. It takes the top edge and skies towards mid off, where Rabada takes a good catch. But all in vain, as the umpire takes it upstairs and checks for the front foot no ball. And it doesn't turn out well for the hosts. De Kock had already entered the dressing room, he has to come back out now. He's so disappointed. It's all a bit funny. 279/9

68.5 V Philander to Abbas, Bouncer from Philander, ducked and evaded. 278/9

67.6 K Rabada to Azam, OUT! Rabada strikes. Babar Azam departs. It was on a length on off, Babar leans forward and tries to defend it, but gets a thick outside edge on it and the ball goes straight to the first slip fielder, Hashim Amla, who takes a simple catch. A brilliant innings of 72 comes to an end. South Africa require 1 more wicket to finish the Pakistan innings. 270/9

Kagiso Rabada is back into the attack.

66.6 V Philander to Abbas, And Abbas negotiates the over! Full and outside off, Abbas strokes it to mid off. 262/8

66.5 V Philander to Abbas, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 262/8

65.6 D Steyn to B Azam, Once again a dot to end the over! Full and on off, Azam strokes it to cover. 262/8

65.5 Steyn to B Azam, FOUR! Over the slip fielder! Azam is luckly there. Steyn almost gets a fifer. This was a brute. On a length and it takes off after pitching. Azam tries to fend by hopping but the ball hits the glove and goes over the first slip fielder and into the third man fence. 262/8

65.4 D Steyn to Azam, Now then, this is strange. Steyn shortens his run up by at least 5 yards and lands it on a length. Azam keeps it out. 258/8

65.3 D Steyn to Azam, Goes fuller on off, Azam strokes it to mid off. 258/8

65.2 D Steyn to Azam, Back of a length on off, it is kept out. 258/8

Vernon Philander into the attack now.

63.6 D Steyn to Abbas, Switches the angle to around the wicket and fires it full around leg, looking to take the leg pole. It just misses, by a very small margin. 257/8

63.5 D Steyn to Abbas, Too far outside off, an easy leave for the tailender. 257/8

63.4 D Steyn to Abbas, On the fifth stump line, a length delivery which zips off the surface. Mohammad Abbas is beaten once again. 257/8

62.5 D Olivier to Azam, FOUR! Top edge and away! Pakistan are now in the lead, by 3 runs. Short ball and Babar takes the pull shot on. It goes off the top edge and flies over the keeper's head. The umpires talk amongst themselves, think about whether to signal it as a wide or not, but then decide it's not high enough for that. 257/8

62.5 D Olivier to Azam, Wide! Short ball down the leg side, wide signalled. 253/8

62.4 D Olivier to Azam, Azam punches this down towards mid on. Both batsmen are halfway down the track, think about whether to take the run or not, but don't so do. Funny enough, they could have had two. 252/8

62.3 D Olivier to Azam, Shaping away from outside off, on a length, dabbed to point with an open face. 252/8

59.1 D Steyn to Shah, OUT! Steyn with his fourth wicket of the game. Yasir Shah departs. It is banged in short on middle, Yasir pulls it, but gets a top edge and the ball flies towards deep fine leg. The substitute fielder Zubayr Hamza takes a brilliant catch just inside the ropes. The fielder was kept just for that shot. Faf du Plessi's plan worked perfectly. He placed the fielder almost right behind the keeper and the ball goes straight to the fielder and Yasir fell in his trap. Pakistan now trail by 7 runs and they need two more wickets to wrap up the innings. 247/8

Mohammad Amir is the new man in for Pakistan.

54.2 D Olivier to Ahmed, OUT! Wickets clipping and the captain has to make the long walk back to the pavilion. Olivier with the breakthrough. It was bowled a touch short on off, the ball jags back in sharply and keeps a bit low. Sarfraz in his crease has no clue whatsoever. He is rapped on the front pad while trying to defend. A loud appeal goes up which is followed by the umpire's finger. The Pakistan captain immediately goes for the review. The replay shows it was just clipping the stumps and Sarfraz departs. Sarfraz and Babar need to build a partnership now. Sarfraz was brilliant in the first innings, Pakistan would like him to play a vital knock in this innings as well.

Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed comes out now.

48.1 Rabada to Zaman, OUT! Rabada strikes! Are the floodgates about to open now? Is this it? South Africa celebrate. A back of a length delivery around off, going across, Zaman, quite unnecessarily, goes for the big heave across the line. The ball rises on him, he's hurried into the shot and it goes off the top edge. Skies towards the mid-wicket area and Rabada himself runs to take it. .... Day 3, Session 3 ....

For the first time in this Test match, you could say it's Pakistan's session. 140 runs were scored at a run rate of 5.60 - unbelievable, isn't it? The visitors' dressing room gives a round of applause to the two men walking back. These two hours were all about the now departed Masood and the unbeaten Shafiq (for now). The two scored their respective fifties and assimilated 132 runs between them, taking the attack to the South African pacers. Masood remains steady, while Shafiq did just the opposite. Would have been perfect for them too, had Steyn now dismissed the opener a little before the break. This contest has suddenly come alive, and it could get real interesting if the batsmen to follow can do their part. Pakistan still trail by 77. A super final session awaits us.

39.6 D Steyn to Azam, FOUR! A loosener outside off from Steyn, Babar Azam just crashes this through the covers for another boundary. Steyn didn't get as much swing as he'd have liked, hence the result. TEA ON DAY 3! 177/3

He dismisses Shan Masood, a player who has shown great class and temperament to stand tall against the home side so far. Amazing batting display. He couldn't do much about this one as he had no choice. Steyn pitched it on a length quite close to off, around the corridor, and made him play. Masood had a feel for it and edged it behind for de Kock to collect it. End of the 132-run stand. Masood walks back to a standing ovation from his teammates in the dressing room. 159/3
