Four dead after horror day on NSW's roads
A three-year-old girl, two men believed to be in their 50s and 30s, and a fourth male yet to be identified all died in separate fatal car crashes on NSW's roads on Saturday.
In the single-vehicle crash south of Dubbo involving the three-year-old child on Saturday, two women were also seriously injured.
About 1pm, emergency services were called to Goolma Road, Wellington, 50km south of Dubbo, after a small hatchback left the road and rolled.
The three-year-old girl sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.
A front-seat passenger, a woman aged 28, was also injured and was airlifted to Westmead Hospital; the driver, a woman aged 32, was taken by road ambulance to hospital.
In the accident involving the man in his 50s, emergency services were called to New Illawarra Road in Lucas Heights, south-west of the Sydney near Heathcote Road, after reports three vehicles had collided. The male driver believed to be in his 50s who died at the scene was driving a 4WD.
The male driver of a utility, aged in his 20s, suffered abdominal injuries. He was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition. His passenger, also aged in his 20s, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for suspected abdominal injuries. He was taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.
The male driver of a second 4WD, and sole occupant, believed to be aged in his 20s, was uninjured. He was taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command, with the assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit, were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
New Illawarra Road was closed in both directions after the incident.
Meanwhile, police were investigating a third incident after a man died in a single-vehicle crash near Young early Saturday morning.
Just before 7am, emergency services were called to Scenic Road, Wirrimah, about 30km north of Young, and found an unregistered Toyota Corolla had left the road, hit a road sign, then came to rest against a tree.
The driver, and only occupant, a man believed to be aged in his 30s, died at the scene.
Detectives from The Hume Police District were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
In a fourth accident, a man died and five people were injured – one seriously – when two vehicles collided head-on north of Grafton on Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened on the Summerland Way at Clifden, 20km north of Grafton, about 2.45pm, when a northbound 4WD towing a trailer and a southbound white sedan collided in the northbound lane.
The man driving the sedan died at the scene.
His wife was trapped for almost two hours before being released and airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital, where she was reported to be in a serious condition.
Two adults and two children were travelling in the 4WD and were taken to Grafton Hospital. The man and one child sustained minor injuries, while the woman and the second child were being checked as a precaution. All were suffering severe shock.
Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District were investigating the circumstances surrounding the Grafton crash and were appealing for anyone with information or dash cam vision to contact Grafton Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Summerland Way was expected to be closed for some time while investigations continued and the vehicles were removed.
