Gurgaon: MCG has drawn inspiration from the Rock Garden in Chandigarh and decided to use construction and demolition (C&D) waste for creating artwork that will soon be spotted on the green belts, roadside berms, government offices and parks across the city.
The corporation has already floated the tender and invited agencies to come up with their ideas for the project. According to MCG officials, they are looking for agencies to use items such as broken tiles, pots, pipes and rocks to create artwork.

“Once the agencies send their ideas, we will evaluate the same and empanel maybe one or more agencies to convert C&D waste into artwork,” said an MCG official, requesting anonymity.

He added that the corporation would bear the cost of the work done by the agencies. The project is aimed at the treatment of C&D waste as well as beautification of the city.

“We are hoping that this will help us reduce the amount of C&D waste by means of recycling and the artwork will then be used to beautify the city,” said the official.

This plan, the MCG officials said, would ensure that C&D waste does not lie exposed in open spaces. According to officials, C&D waste is not only an eyesore but also adds to pollution levels in the city. MCG officials said that the appointed agencies would also visit C&D waste collection centres and pick up waste items from these spots to create artwork.

“We may even install such artwork on the entry points of Gurgaon such as the Rajokri border,” added the official.

Gurgaon generates around 400 tonnes of C&D waste daily and the volume is only increasing due to rampant construction in the city.

While MCG already had a plan to get C&D waste treated and used for the construction of roads, the quantity of such waste produced in the city is quite overwhelming. Moreover, the city’s C&D waste plant project is currently stuck as the agency concerned is currently facing financial problems.
