Former JD (U) MLA Raju Singh who is accused of killing an architect in a celebratory firing on the New Year's eve in South Delhi's Fatehpur Beri area told the police that he was drunk and had fired in the air not realising it would hit the architect. The accused along with his driver Hari Singh is currently under seven-day police custody and they will be taken to the farmhouse as well Kushinagar from where they were arrested in order to establish the sequence of event. The rifle as well as the pistol was licensed, the police said.
The initial post-mortem report of the victim, Archana Gupta, suggested that the bullet which led to her death was a small one. As per the witnesses, it was Raju who was firing from the pistol and Hari Singh was firing from the rifle. During interrogation, he told the cops that he was on his way to Bihar and only stopped by for meals mid-way. "He said he had 800 live rounds as he feared for his life since he was moving towards a Naxal-prone zone," said an officer privy to the investigtaion.
Meanwhile, Raju's wife Renu Singh and an associate Ramender Singh were produced before the Saket court. The two were arrested for destroying the evidence by cleaning the blood and hiding the empty catridges. Renu did not cooperate much in the investigation. They told the police the location where they had hid the empty catridge. However, it was not found there. Despite that the police officials did not demand their police custody and they were sent to 14 days judicial custody. Renu's lawyer moved a bail application which will be heard on Saturday. She seemed rather calm and composed during the court proceedings, with her relatives asking her to stay strong.
