New Delhi: The CBI may launch an investigation into Akhilesh Yadav as part of its probe into alleged illegal sand mining in 2012-2013 during which the Samajwadi Party leader was the CM and mining minister.
The agency will investigate the alleged role of all ministers, sources told News18 hours after the CBI conducted searches at 12 locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, including senior SP leaders, in connection with the mining scam.
Another former minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, who held the portfolio of the mining department, is also likely to be summoned by the CBI in the case, PTI quoted sources as saying.
Among those whose property was searched on Saturday were Samajwadi Party MLC Ramesh Mishra in Hamirpur and BSP leader Ram Avtar Rajput in Jalaun district.
The residences of senior officers, including IAS officer B Chandrakala, who is famous on social media for her anti-corruption crusade, were also raided in connection with the case.
It was alleged that Chandrakala, who was district magistrate of Hamirpur during the Samajwadi Party government, had given undue favours to SP leaders who were allegedly involved in illegal mining.
The searches were spread across multiple districts including Jalaun, Hamirpur, Lucknow and also in the national capital, they added.
The agency had taken up the case on the instructions of Allahabad High Court.
In what is likely to spark a controversy, the CBI raids came a day after the Samajwadi Party and BSP reportedly finalised an alliance for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, virtually excluding the Congress.
