1.11kg gold seized at Tvm airport
tnn | Jan 5, 2019, 23:48 ISTThiruvananthapuram: Air intelligence unit (AIU) at Trivandrum International Airport seized 1.11 kg gold from a passenger on Friday. The passenger, identified as Ahamed, of Kanhangad in Kasaragod, arrived in Air India Express flight IX 540 from Dubai.
Based on suspicion, the AIU officers intercepted the passenger at the airport and the gold in the form of crude gold chains was found inside a packet of dates in the bag carried by the passenger. There were ten gold chains of various sizes and were covered with silver foils.
According to an AIU officer, it was difficult to find the gold, wort h Rs 35 lakh, hidden inside a packet of dates through X-ray screening and it was based on profiling that the smuggled gold was recovered.
“The passenger was a carrier. We have a system of checking the profiles of the passengers at the airport.
And while checking the profile of the passenger, it was found that he was a frequent traveller and some cases have been reported from the area. The passenger travelled on visiting visa and he was working in a supermarket in Dubai,” said the AIU officer.
A team led by AIU deputy commissioner (intelligence) Krishnendu Raja Mintoo and superintendents Sreekumar, Baiju R and Ancy and inspectors Pramod and Sunil Nagar made the seizure.
A case has been registered as per customs act and a probe has been launched .
