Gold bars worth about Rs 1 crore were found abandoned in a bag near a check-post at nearby Porayar, police said on Friday.

It is suspected that smugglers might have thrown the bag with the precious metal fearing police action.
Nagapattinam Superintendent of Police C Vijaykumar and other senior officials inspected the spot and further investigation was on, police said.
The police have tightened vehicle checks at the checkpost during the past one week to prevent smuggling of liquor from Karaikal in view of New Year celebrations
Sub-Inspector Natarajan, on duty at the check post on the Tamil Nadu-Karaikal (Puducherry) border, noticed the leather bag on Thursday night. He found 27 gold bars in it.
