Virar teen set on fire by dad for using cellphone dies

MUMBAI: The 16-year-old, Virar girl, who was allegedly set ablaze by her father for speaking on the cellphone succumbed to burn injuries in a Mumbai hospital on Saturday.
On December 31, around 2 pm when Shaista Mansoori was speaking on her cellphone, her father Mohammed scolded her. Suspecting that she was talking to her boyfriend, he destroyed her cellphone and began beating her.
As Shaista starting running out of their ground floor flat in Noor Manzil, he dragged her to the kitchen, poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
She ran out of the house while screaming for help after which neighbours took her to the nearby Sanjeevani hospital.
With over 70 per cent burns she was shifted to the KEM hospital in Mumbai where she was on ventilator support.
Mansoori was arrested and booked for attempt to murder on the basis of the girl's statement given to the police.
Shaista who succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday worked as a househelp in the locality. She had purchased the cellphone a few months ago.
Mansoori, who is in police custody from Saturday, did not show any remorse on setting his daughter on fire. He told the police that she used to speak on the phone for hours and when asked would never reply whom she was talking to. Mansoori suspected that she was having an affair and the phone was given to her by her boyfriend.
