Suburban train services on the Beach-Tambaram section were disrupted for about 30 minutes on Friday morning after an EMU stopped near the workshop gate at 8 a.m..

The Tirumalpur-Chennai Beach train, which was parked on Platform 1 could not move out, and this paralysed the entire rail network. More than four trains were held up in different parts of the Beach-Tambaram stretch between 8 a.m. and 8.45 a.m., spoiling the day for hundreds of commuters.

Railway officials said the services resumed only after technicians repaired the faulty motor of the train. Though four trains were delayed, services were not cancelled, they said.

Those travelling to Chennai Beach had to wait at the stations en route because trains were not operated for some time. Ramachandra Kurup, a commuter from Chengalpet, said: “Several commuters travelling to their workplaces and schools and colleges would have suffered further had the EMU broken down but fortunately, it was set right within half an hour, thanks to the efforts by Southern Railway personnel at Tambaram.”
