French town hits back at writer over ‘ugly’ tag

The French town of Niort, described by the protagonist of Michel Houllebecq’s latest novel as “one of the ugliest” he has ever seen, invited the author to visit on Friday to sample its local “happy” herb.


While some Niort locals called for a boycott of “Serotonin”, the mayor of the town shrugged off the slight. Jerome Baloge also said he would send Houllebecq some angelica which he said had properties included the power to “make people happy” — a dig at the morose Houllebecq.
