HYDERABAD: The hard work by SHE teams in the twin cities has paid off as the number of juveniles caught for eve-teasing has come down from 26% in 2014 to 12% in 2018. SHE Team was launched in Hyderabad on October 24, 2014. On April 1, 2015, it was launched in all districts of Telangana.
Each SHE Team is headed by a sub-inspector of police and consists of an ASI or head constable, a lady constable and two or three male constables. Each unit in a district is supervised by a DSP-rank official. Sleuths of SHE teams keep a watch on crowded places such as bus stops near women’s colleges, markets, local trains etc. When they notice eve-teasing or any kind of harassment towards women, they video-record the evidence and arrest the offenders. SHE teams also act on complaints of harassment received through social media, Hawk Eye police app, emails, letters received through post, and walk-ins at their offices.
“We also conduct awareness programs so that people know when and how to approach SHE teams. Based on the nature of offence, cases are registered under IPC, including Nirbhaya Act, IT Act. Repeated offenders have been booked under the PD Act and juvenile offenders were counselled by professional psychologists in the presence of their parents,” said inspector general Swati Lakra.
