NEW DELHI: The frustrating experience of sitting in a metro coach and not receiving any signal on your mobile phone may soon be a thing of the past, with DMRC planning to fix the problem by the end of February.

Over 300 personnel have been deployed specially to work during non-operational hours at night to improve signal connectivity and install boosters in underground stations, particularly on the Pink and Magenta lines where the problem is the most acute. “Work is currently in progress for providing mobile connectivity on the Pink and Magenta lines. The entire work is expected to be completed next month,” said Anuj Dayal, executive director (corporate communications), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

A metro official said the issues were only limited to the underground stations on these lines, with the elevated stations receiving signal without any problem. On Pink Line, the fully underground Bhikaji Cama-Hazrat Nizamuddin stretch is currently being worked on, while on Magenta Line, the problematic stretch is between Kalkaji Mandir and Janakpuri West.

The same problem was also found in certain underground sections of Blue, Yellow and Airport Express lines, following which Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was asked to carry out a survey.

“Based on the survey, certain weak spots had been identified and signal boosters have already been asked to be placed there. We used the same technology at sections of Violet Line, including the ITO station, to sort out the mobile connectivity issue,” said a spokesperson. Such work can be undertaken only during non-operational hours as workers have to enter the tunnels for the job, he added. “Mobile connectivity is available on all other metro corridors,” he claimed.

DMRC began operations on the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus-Lajpat Nagar section of Pink Line in August 2018, while the Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section started functioning in March. The Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar section of Pink line was the latest section to be made operational on December 31, while a 1.4km stretch betweeen Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake is not ready yet. Magenta Line was made fully operational in May.
