KOLKATA: Refusing to accept a students' council instead of a students' union, the humanities section of Jadavpur University has demanded an immediate date for the union election.

The students, affiliation to different unions, met inside the university on Friday and reached at a consensus that the students' council would not be acceptable. "The notification of the union election is usually done by this time but this year, it has not happened. We have requested the authorities to issue the date at the earliest. We will follow up with them after one week," said Somashree Choudhury, chairperson of the Arts Faculty Students' Union.

The government has amended the rules, replacing students unions with apolitical students' councils apparently to "keep politics out of campus". An election to the students' union at JU was last held in 2017. There has been no election in the past two years.
