Basketball was once a prominent sport in this part of the region. And, just when it seemed to be losing its charm the Coimbatore District Basketball Association (CDBA) went all out to put it back on track.

Boys and girls have been guided so well at the grassroots level that they have now started winning laurels at the State and national level. The Samhita Academy (Coimbatore) has now joined the rest to nurture stars for the future.

As a first step, it is currently hosting a district-level tournament for mini boys and girls at the Perks Sports Academy courts here. Sixteen boys’ teams and four girls’ team have enrolled for the event, which began on Thursday.

The outstanding players from this tournament will be picked for a special training camp and guided for the future.

Former Olympian N. Amarnath’s presence at the venue made it all the more special for the young children. He was pretty excited to see young talents going through a tough grind from the start. Beside regular play, there was a skill development programmes, shooting, full court press and lay-up competitions. The best among them all in both sections were rewarded as well. The academy plans to make it an annual affair.
