KOCHI: Several incidents of violence were reported from central Kerala during the 12-hour hartal on Thursday. Five BJP men were injured in clashes with SDPI workers in Thrissur. A dispute over the closing of a hotel at Ganeshamangalam, Vadanappilli on Wednesday afternoon led to the clashes.
The hartal was total in Thrissur, with violence being reported from several parts of the district, including Wadakkanchery, Cheruthuruthi, Pudukad and Irinjalakuda. Traders, who had earlier defied the hartal call, backed out sensing security risk.
Journalists were attacked in Thrissur town, Pudukad and Irinjalakuda. A bus owned by Karnataka state transport corporation was damaged at Sakthan Thampuran bus stand. CPM offices at Wadakkanchery, Cheruthuruthi and Kuzhoor were attacked. CPM men retaliated by pelting stones at Wadakkanchery. A BMS office at Kochukadavu near Mala was also attacked. Despite the shutdown, 14 marriages were held in Guruvayur.
Isolated incidents of violence were reported in Ernakulam during the hartal and police arrested as many as 220 men in different cases.
Defying the hartal call, shops in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry functioned. Though a majority of shops in Broadway and Ernakulam Bazaar remained closed, around 40 establishments functioned under police protection. Shops on Jew Street and Kappalandi Junction in Mattancherry conducted business as usual.
Earlier in the day, district collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla visited Broadway and ensured police protection to open shops. In Alappuzha, a Karnataka RTC bus was damaged at Kalavoor, even as hartal supporters forcibly closed shops in the district. A vehicle, proceeding to Alappuzha Medical College with food for poor patients as part of DYFI’s ‘hridayapoorvam’ project was attacked. The food was later taken to the hospital in another vehicle and distributed to around 600 patients.
A statue of Gandhi in front of Pathiyoor panchayat Government High School was vandalized allegedly by hartal supporters. On Wednesday night, hartal supporters pelted stones at a KSRTC bus, injuring the driver. Stray incidents of violence were reported from Kottayam and four persons were injured when party offices of CPM in Pampady and Changanassery were attacked by BJP men.
