Rajkot: The state-owned Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) is all set to give tough competition to private bus operators with commencement of Volvo bus services from 150-feet Ring Road that has become transportation hub over the past few year.
The state transporter has asked Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) to provide 500 sq yard land on 150-feet Ring Road near Big Bazar to operate its Volvo bus services.
With the expansion of Rajkot city over the last 15 years, areas around 150-feet Ring Road and Kalavad road have emerged as posh destination in the city.
People living on Kalavad road, Ring Road and University Road prefer to board bus from Ring Road. All the malls and big show rooms have also come up on 150-feet Ring Road and Kalavad Road.
Currently, most of the private buses originate from near Big Bazar and Indira circle on 150-feet Ring Road, while GSRTC buses start from Shashtri Maidan and passes through old city areas. This is one of the reasons why the state transporter is not able to attract the commuters from newly developed areas.
GSRTC now want to start it’s Volvo service from the ring road to attract commuters from the newly developed areas.
Rajkot divisional manager of GSRTC Dinesh Jethva told TOI, “We have requested the RMC for land and hope it will be allotted to us very soon. We need a small portion of land where we can start an office and park a few buses.”
GSRTC has increased the frequency of Rajkot-Ahmedabad Volvo buses recently. There are 14 buses and 28 trips between the two cities. The state PSU has started new Volvo bus service to Bhuj, Bhavnagar and Diu via Somnath from Rajkot recently.
Currently, GSRTC buses makes four trips to Bhuj and Diu and 18 trips to Bhavnagar from Rajkot and the number will increase depending on response from people.
According to GSRTC officials, there is 60% occupancy in all Volvo bus service.
