KOLKATA: A retired textile engineer living in Salt Lake was arrested on Thursday for allegedly trying to drive off in his car with the hand of a civic police volunteer, who was trying to book him for illegal parking and drink-driving, stuck in the car window. Debajit Kumar Das, a resident of Salt Lake AE Block, was later released on bail from the police station after paying a fine.
The incident happened around 11am, when a senior traffic cop of Bidhannagar Commissionerate found a car illegally parked outside a private bank at BF Block. The officer asked a sergeant and a civic police volunteer to book the car for ‘No-Parking’ offence. Acting on his instruction, volunteer Sandip Dubey (29) went to the spot, took down the car registration number and was waiting for the driver. When Das arrived, Dubey asked him to furnish his driving licence but the man allegedly denied and got into his car and said he was leaving the spot.
“When the man tried to drive away, the volunteer extended his right hand through the car window asking for the licence but the man rolled up the power window. The volunteer’s arm got stuck and the man began driving the vehicle. The volunteer struggled to wriggle out of the locked window as the man continued to drive for some meters,” said a senior traffic officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
The man allegedly stopped the car only after Dubey started losing his balance while running and was almost being dragged on the road. Das rolled the window down and tried to flee again but the volunteer quickly stood in front of the car and called for additional force.
“By the time other officers reached the spot, Dubey had a badly bruised arm but had still prevented the man from scooting away. Upon checking, we found the man was drunk,” the officer said. His car – a Maruti Suzuki Swift — was seized. Dubey was taken to Bidhannagar sub divisional hospital for preliminary treatment.
After Das was released on bail, TOI spoke to his family members who said Das didn’t know that it was a no-parking zone and didn’t willingly hurt the civic volunteer. “He parks his car in that area on other days but no one has ever booked him. My father had rolled up the window to vacate the spot but the volunteer tried to snatch the car key and his hand accidentally got stuck. He stopped the car immediately after he realized that the volunteer was injured,” said Debanjan Das, his son.
