The year in pictures from Dion Georgopoulos: Telling the stories of Canberra

It has been an exciting year, and I have had the opportunity to capture a range of different stories, people and environments.

One moment I could be capturing a decisive sports moment or having five minutes to problem solve to setting up and shoot a portrait. The next, I could be sitting down with people like Mark Ransome or whistleblower Katrina McLean who have powerful stories to tell.

Although out of all these different highlights throughout this year one stands out. We organised a shoot with a small group of Croatian football fans at Deakin Stadium a few days before the world cup. When I arrived, instead of a seeing a small group of people, hundreds of people filled the stadium.

I couldn't believe it, they handed me a microphone and I started to direct the crowd. On the count of 3, 2, 1 they all started cheering, lighting flares, and waving flags for the love of their country. To see so many passionate people come together for a photograph was amazing.
