Phone, not revenge, behind fatal attack on rape accused: Police
Sanjay Yadav | TNN | Jan 4, 2019, 07:42 ISTGurgaon: Four persons were arrested on Thursday, a day after a 20-year-old accused in a child rape case succumbed to his injuries after being brutally thrashed. It was initially suspected that the assailants might have been related to the girl, seeking revenge, but investigations revealed the crime took place after the youth refused to lend his phone to a stranger.
Sonu Sharma, originally from Rajasthan, was accused in a POCSO Act case registered in April 2018 and had been released on bail from Bhondsi jail around 15 days before. He was thrashed on New Year’s Eve and succumbed to his injuries in Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday. The four arrested — Yogesh, Neeraj, Ankit and Pradeep — are in their mid-20s and are residents of Baldev Nagar colony. Police said they have confessed to the crime. They were produced in a city court and sent to two-day police remand for questioning.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the main accused, Yogesh, had asked Sonu to lend him his mobile phone to make a call on New Year’s Eve, and the latter had refused. Infuriated by his repeated refusals, Yogesh called his friends to the spot, who then thrashed Sonu and his friend Dipanshu brutally. Later that day, Dipanshu filed a police complaint, stating he was standing near Life Care Hospital on Madanpuri with Sonu, when the accused arrived and began to thrash them. He alleged they were thrashed and left to die, but managed to reach a private hospital with the help of passersby.
From there, Sonu was referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital owing to his critical condition. Police registered an FIR under sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC at New Colony police station on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they were informed that Sonu Sharma had succumbed to his injuries. So they also added Section 302 (murder) of the IPC in the FIR.
“Around five more youths who were involved in the crime are on the run. We have taken those arrested on two days’ police remand for questioning. The others will be arrested soon as we are conducting raids at places where they are suspected to be hiding”, said inspector Ashok Dagar, SHO of New Colony police station.
Sonu was arrested in April 2018 for allegedly raping his 13-year-old neighbour in Bheem Nagar, where he lived as tenant and worked as a helper in a shop in Sadar Bazaar.
