Wrapping a gift makes it more desirable and Mital says that there are many companies and independent artists who specialised in wrapping. “Though the numbers have reduced, people who love to show off opt for fancy packaging, the rest follow classy style. Many people opt for gift boxes made of eco-friendly materials such as palm leaves, cloths, jute, recycled paper, wood and coir. Whatever material you use, maintain the ‘wow’ factor. If you feel that a gift box or container made of palm leaves isn’t fancy enough, add a little bit of bling to it and make it look presentable,” says Mital.
She also trains transgenders from the city in making quirky gift wrappers. “Since there are many DIY options, try and add a personal touch which not only means innovating but also adding oodles of style with contemporary designs and patterns.”
Roopika Sood, an origami artist, organises gift wrapper making workshops in the city. “There are many ways in which you can make lovely wrappers. If you are trying to bring in an eco-friendly practice, follow the mantra, reduce, reuse and recycle. This would definitely go a long way and would bring in a positive impact. You can either recycle gift wrappers or use recycled paper for wrapping gifts. We buy wrappers hoping that the receiver would appreciate it. But sometimes it would end in their dustbins. Avoid that situation by customising the presentation,” the artist suggests.
Paper bags are now doing the rounds and many are showing a parallel interest in making DIY bags. “The best way to bring out your inner artist is by trying personalised doodles on these bags.”
