Stating that the traffic sentinel scheme is causing  a law and order situation, the Congress on Friday demanded that the government should immediately withdraw the scheme.

“People are approaching our leaders and MLAs with the complaint that this scheme is being run like a ‘blind tune’ by the government as there is no system in place. And if this scheme  continues to exist then there will be law and order situation in the state for which the government will be held responsible. This scheme should be stopped immediately, and the government should come out with some other measures (against traffic violations),” Goa pradesh

Congress committee president Girish Chodankar said while interacting with media persons at  Porvorim.

He claimed that under this scheme the registered sentinels are given “cameras”. The sentinels capture traffic violations  and send the photographs to the police. The police on their part  send notices and challans to  violators of traffic rules.

“Innocent people are being harassed, and at police stations arrangements have not been made to pay fines. What will be the fallout of the scheme? People of Goa are agitated…. Goans, by and large, are law-abiding…  And they are receiving challans and notices,” he said.

Chodankar referred to an  incident at Shiroda where hundreds of locals threatened and forced a shopkeeper to vacate his rented premises as the challans had allegedly been issued based on the video footages provided by the mobile phone seller at  Shiroda.

“At Shiroda, the police have registered an FIR against an individual who had extended support to the people,” he said, adding that the government is free to target the Congress office-bearers and should spare the people.
