A case was lodged on Thursday by Ahmedabad crime branch officials against deputy superintendent of police NP Patel in sub-inspector Devendrasinh Rathod's suicide case. The case had been handed over to the Ahmedabad crime branch by Director General of Police Shivanand Jha.
Rathod's family members had been demanding that a complaint be lodged against Patel and had refused to accept his body from the hospital. For three days, Rathod's body had been in the hospital's cold room. It was only after the case was lodged that Rathod's family agreed to take his body.
Ahmedabad crime branch officials had reached Rath-od's house on Thursday and had tried to convince his family to accept the body. The family members agreed to accept the body only if the crime branch was ready to lodge a complaint against the DySP on the basis of Rathod's suicide note and allegations made by Rathod's wife.
After a discussion with the family, crime branch officials took the complaint. It was lodged by Rathod's father Satyandrasinh Thakur against DySP NP Patel, alleging that due to the mental and physical torture by the DySP, his son had committed suicide, Apart from that, it was alleged that the DySP had been asking sexual favours from Rathod and even forced him into complying. Regarding the matter, a complaint was lodged under IPC 306 and IPC 377 against the DySP and further investigation is on.
Deepen Bhadran, DCP, crime branch, said, "We had sent a team to the victim's house, where the complaint in the matter was taken by our officials. Right now, we are trying to collect more evidence in the case and further investigation is on."
When DNA spoke to Rathod's brother Hemendrasinh Rathod, he said: "We have agreed to accept the body of my brother from the hospital after the complaint was lodged against the DySP. A team of crime branch officials had come to our house and they convinced us. We will be going to the hospital at around 8am in the morning and his funeral will take place at Vadaj Crematorium."
On December 31, Rathod had committed suicide by shooting himself with a service revolver at his residence in the Chandlodia area, leaving behind a suicide note alleging that due to the constant pressure and harassment by DySP NP Patel, he had taken the extreme step.
