CHENNAI: Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagham functionary S Kamaraj is the party’s candidate for the January 28 byelection in Tiruvarur assembly constituency, AMMK deputy general secretary T T V Dhinakaran said on Friday.
The AMMK has become the first among the three major contenders – the AIADMK and the DMK being the other two -- to name the candidate for the byelection.
Kamaraj, who is AMMK’s Tiruvarur district secretary, would file his nomination on January 8, Dhinakaran said at the end of a consultative meeting of party functionaries in Thanjavur.
"We won in R K Nagar by a margin of around 40,000 votes. Our candidate in Tiruvarur will win by a bigger margin now. He will start his campaign soon after filing his nomination. I will join a few days later," Dhinakaran told reporters.
"Tiruvarur may have been the DMK stronghold earlier. It has already become an AMMK fort now. Alliance arithmetic is not a school marksheet to add all numbers. Votes are decided by people's mindset and not by number of parties in alliance. You will know after AMMK candidate emerges victorious in this bypoll. People want a change, they are with the AMMK and they will not get swayed by any freebies offered by the state government and others," he said.
Dhinakaran reiterated his Thursday’s statement that the ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition party DMK were trying to get the bypoll postponed, fearing a loss.
The byelection was necessitated by the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.
