Overnight stays have increased by almost 10 percent and the total number of visitors has increased by 15 percent in the initial ten months of last year in compared to the same time in 2017, as per the Provincial Delegation of Tourism. Redouan Khan, the president of Essaouira’s Provincial Council for Tourism, stated that the rush of European tourists was comforting and Essaouira has turned out to be a top tourist destination.

Khan explained that his appreciation for the sector and its efforts to turn Essaouira into a clean, safe destination with welcoming environment and offer services to the visitors.

Its weather, proximity to Europe, the openness of the residents and the richness of its cultural heritage have all made Essaouira an ideal venue for art and culture events. Each year, Essaouira organizes multiple festivals like the Gnaoua World Music Festival in June. The “city of wind” is tailor-made for surfing, and visitors can spend quality time to explore activities like fishing or practicing other favorite water sports. For shopping fans, the souks in the medina (old city), a UNESCO World Heritage site, provide a wide range of souvenirs and finely crafted traditional items.

A number of organizations have worked to improve tourism in Essaouira, including the Ministry of Tourism, the National Office of Airports (ONDA), and the Essaouira Mogador Association.

According to Khan, the council has doubled its efforts to launch direct flights linking Essaouira to London, Madrid, and Barcelona.
