PUNE: A cab driver was arrested on Tuesday from Dattawadi on charges of sexually harassing a woman software engineer in December last year.
The woman had submitted a written complaint to the Hinjewadi police then but did not pursue the case. Nor did she respond to phone calls from police.
After the arrest, a policeman was sent to the woman’s house with a request to come to the police station and lodge a complaint. After discussions with her fiancé, the woman lodged a complaint.
Anand Pagare, assistant inspector of Hinjewadi police, said the incident occurred on December 5 when the woman was travelling in a share cab from her office to her home at Mhalunge in Mulshi taluka. “There were two more passengers in the cab. They got down after some time, following which the woman was alone,” he said.
The woman alleged in her complaint that the driver started speaking to her in a filthy language. “She claimed that the driver continued to speak that way till she was dropped,” he said.
The woman had noted down the registration number of the cab and submitted a written complaint the next day. “While probing the application, our team tried to call her, but she did not respond to our calls,” Pagare said.
He said the police traced the cab with the help of the registration number and took driver Santosh Shete (39) into custody. “He has been charged under IPC section 354A (sexual harassment),” he added.
