BAREILLY: Uttar Pradesh police sub-inspector Manoj Kumar, posted in Sambhal, who was caught in a viral video clip shouting “thain-thain” during an encounter when his gun got jammed three months ago, redeemed himself on Friday. He got shot in the hand by a real gun during another encounter.
Sambhal superintendent of police Yamuna Prasad said Kumar sustained bullet injury in his hand during the encounter with a dreaded criminal, Saddam, who was shot in the leg too and arrested early on Friday. He was wanted in 15 cases of loot, theft and attempt to murder and carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on him, said the SP.
“We had the information regarding two criminals coming on a motorbike. Our team had taken position near Alianekpur tri-junction in the district. When cops saw two men coming on a motorbike, they signalled to them to stop. Instead, the miscreants opened fire on the police party leaving SI Manoj Kumar injured,” Prasad said.
“Our officers fired in self-defence. A bullet hit Saddam in the leg and he was arrested later. Another accused escaped,” the SP said.
In October last year, Kumar mimicking gunshots after his weapon got jammed during a search operation had left millions of internet viewers bemused. As the video clip remained the most searched on the internet in India for days, scores of memes followed, putting UP Police in a tight spot. One of the most circulated ones was a parody of UP Police styled on the famous song from Uma Thurman-starrer 2003 movie Kill Bill – “Thain-thain, you shot me down/thain-thain I hit the ground…”.
While the state police tried to undo the damage by presenting Kumar with a bravery certificate and recommending him for DGP commendation for his “quick thinking”, the joke lingered on. Kumar was later invited as the chief guest to a Facebook event planned in Delhi’s CP to celebrate Diwali without firecrackers where the attendees were to shout “thain-thain” in tandem. It is not known if the event was held but Kumar didn’t attend it.
