Day 1 review: Aiden Markram scored a half century on the opening day of the second Test at Newlands against Pakistan on Thursday as South Africa reached 123-2 at stumps.

The Proteas are currently just 54 runs behind Pakistan after Sarfraz Ahmed’s men – put in to bat after Faf du Plessis won the toss – suffered another batting collapse and were bundled out after just two sessions on the first day.

Markram and his opening partner Dean Elgar put together a 55-run stand for the opening wicket but Elgar was the first to depart after edging one to Sarfraz behind the stumps off Mohammad Amir’s bowling.

Hashim Amla then joined Markram in the middle and the two looked like they would see out the remaining overs without much fuss but the latter was bowled on 78 on the final ball of the day by Shan Masood.

But earlier in the day it was pacer Duanne Olivier who did the damage for South Africa once again, taking four wickets as the visitors folded for a paltry 177 when tea was taken.

Olivier ended the first innings with figures of 4-48, a performance that will only bring more attention to him after he bagged 11 wickets in the first Test in Pretoria, which the hosts won by six wickets.

South Africa went into the Test with an all-out seam attack and the tactic worked wonders as they snared five quick wickets before lunch and then mopped up the remaining half of the side after the second session was extended.

For Pakistan, it was another forgettable outing with the bat as only skipper Sarfraz Ahmed – who top-scored for them 56 – and Shan Masood (44) offered a lick of resistance in a 60-run partnership after lunch before a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock tipped the scales in favour of the home side.

Pakistan were 75-5 at lunch but a fightback seemed possible thanks to the partnership between Ahmed and Masood, with the former playing a knock that was both solid and kept the scoreboard ticking.

However, any chance of a big partnership bringing Pakistan back into the game was snuffed out when Masood was spectacularly caught by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada.

Olivier then removed Sarfraz, who was aiming to fight fire with fire but ended up playing a needless shot and will once again bring up questions about his future as skipper despite him scoring his 17th half century in the longest format of the game.

Olivier, who is playing only his seventh Test, then removed Yasir Shah cheaply before Dale Steyn cleaned up the tail in the extended second session.

Steyn took 3-48 with Rabada returning figures of 2-35 and Vernon Philander 1-36, on his return to the side after injury.

103.6 M Amir to Plessis, Once again Faf du Plessis is early into the pull shot. It goes off the toe end towards mid off. 339/5

Faf is receiving some medical attention. He looks fine, but you never want to take chances with head injuries.

103.5 Amir to Plessis, RIGHT ON THE BADGE! A bumper by Amir, Faf is a little too early into the pull. He misses and the ball hits him on the helmet. 339/5

103.1 M Amir to Plessis, 100 for Faf du Plessis, his 9th in Test cricket and what an innings this has been. He came out when they had lost two quick wickets and he has showed excellent character here on a wicket which is very difficult to bat on. Copped a few blows but continued to craft a brilliant innings. He gets to the milestone with another excellently timed shot. It is slightly full and around off, he strokes it through covers. It does not have enough legs to get to the boundary but the batsmen run three. He pumps his fist as he completes the third. Takes his helmet off and soaks in all the applause by the crowd. Well deserved. Well played skipper, you have led from the front here. 336/5

102.2 M Abbas to Plessis, DROPPED! Huge moment in the game. Fuller on leg, du Plessis flicks it and Sarfraz goes to his left and he gets both his hands to it and still drops it. Lazy effort from Sarfraz behind the stumps. He should have caught it. That was a sitter. Sarfraz normally takes brilliant catches but he will be disapointed with that effort. Abbas is frustrated. Luck is not going their way today, with some play and misses and edges not carrying. That wicket would have changed the momentum. Is that the turning point of the game? We have to wait and watch. 332/5

95.5 S Afridi to de Kock, So easily could have been three in a row! Full and on off, asking to be hit. De Kock drives it firmly but straight to the man at covers. A little to the left or the right and it would have been three in a row. 313/5

95.4 S Afridi to Kock, FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for de Kock to begin with. This is short and outside off, de Kock waits for it and then guides it through short third man for another boundary. 313/5

Quinton de Kock is the new man in for South Africa.

95.2 S Afridi to Bavuma, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Shaheen Afridi provides the breakthrough Pakistan so desperately wanted. Ends the 150-plus run stand, ends a magnificent knock by Bavuma on a very, very difficult wicket. He walks off to a standing ovation and he deserves every bit of it. Coming to the ball now, it is on a length and around off, it is angled into the batter first, Bavuma tries to play the original trajectory but it pitches and then moves away. Takes the outside edge and Sarfraz takes a good catch diving to his right. Can this now open the floodgates? Pakistan will hope so. 305/5

92.1 M Amir to Bavuma, Length delivery on off, Temba defends it with a straight bat. 292/4

Abbas appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Bavuma goes for the review. The replay shows it is going just over the bails. The on-field call has to be overturned. Excellent use of the review there. Unfortunate for Pakistan. They can't believe it has not gone in their favour. The look on their faces says it all. They were in desperate need of this wicket, they felt they had got it only for the DRS to overturn the decision. 287/4

.... Day 2, Session 3 ....

Brilliant session for South Africa. They have scored at around three runs per over and have gone wicketless. The captain, Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma are amidst a 132-run stand and are taking the game away from the visitors. They have dominated the bowlers and would look to do the same in the last session. For the visitors, they have not been at their best, leaking easy runs. However, with the new ball being taken, Sarfraz will be hoping for the fast bowlers to take some wickets and wrap the innings up as soon as possible. Could be a defining session for both the teams.

31.5 Abbas to H Amla, OUT! TIMBER! What a start for Pakistan and Abbas. Amla's poor run with the bat continues. It is a tad short on off, Amla shuffles across to his off pole, the ball hits one of the crack and jags back in a long way. Amla then tries to flick it with the movement but fails to put bat on ball. It uproots the leg stump. Amla has a puzzled look on his face. Maybe he never expected the ball to deviate so much. Huge wicket for the visitors. We are all set for the action to begin! Out come the Pakistan players. They are followed by Hashim Amla and Theunis de Bruyn, who is the new man in. It is Mohammad Amir who will start the proceedings for the visitors. Here we go...

Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan. The hosts are in a commanding position at the moment and they will look to have a stronger hold on the game by the end of today. A big lead is what they will be looking for on a wicket which seems to have eased off. Pakistan on the other hand, need a few quick wickets if they are to get back in the game. They need one of their bowlers to step up and deliver the goods. Will someone do so? Also, we saw the bowlers dominate yesterday, will we see the same today? Stay tuned to find out in a while.

... Day 2, Session 1 ...

Now then, what will we have in store for us on Day 2? Will the hosts continue the domination or will Pakistan fight back? Join us to find out at 1030 local (0830 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!

Credit though has to be given to the Protea bowlers. Earlier in the day, they made quick work of the Pakistan batting line-up and bundled them out for a pretty low score with all the bowlers taking a wicket at least. Olivier was the star once again as he finished with a four-fer. For Pakistan, had it not been for their skipper who scored a half ton, even getting to 100 would have been difficult. In reply, The South African batters have started off really well and they would now look to continue the same.

A wicket right at the end gives Pakistan something to smile about. However, it has been all South Africa today. They head into Day 2 in a very commanding position, courtesy some outstanding batting by their top order in the final session. First it was Markram and Elgar who added a 56-run stand, then the former, along with Amla, stitched another 50-plus stand. The opener was dismissed in an unfortunate manner after playing a fluent innings. One though would feel he has done a good enough job for his side. The hosts trail by only 54 more runs and have a lot of batting to come.

29.6 S Masood to Markram, OUT! TIMBER! Wicket off the last ball of the day. And it comes from the most unlikely source - Shan Masood. What a masterstroke from Sarfraz Ahmed. Delight for Pakistan. However, this is a very fortunate dismissal for them. Nothing Markram could have done about that. It is a touch short on off, it pitches and jags back. Keeps very low. It almost seemed like it never left the ground. Markram tries to defend it from the crease but then seeing the bad bounce, tries to adjust, is not able to do so and the ball knocks the off stump out. Markram can't believe it as he trudges off in disgust. He was looking all set for a big one but luck was not on his side. THAT WILL ALSO BE STUMPS ON DAY 1. SOUTH AFRICA ARE 123/2. 123/2
