Karnataka hikes fuel prices by almost ₹2

Representative imageBENGALURU: The Karnataka government on Friday increased sales tax on motorfuel products, taking the price of petrol up by Rs 1.79 a litre and that of diesel by Rs 1.83 a litre. A litre of petrol in Bengaluru will cost Rs 70.84 per litre and diesel Rs 64.66.
The move is at odds with Congress’s official stand to make the two fuels cheaper. Congress has been demanding that petroleum products be brought under GST, the rates of which should be capped at 18% for all goods and services.
The HD Kumaraswamy government offered rate comparison with neighbouring states as balm, saying the prices of motor fuel, even after revision, are lower than that in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala.
The sudden move left motorists in the state furious. Petrol prices, which have been declining since October 18 except for one day, were at the lowest level on the last day of the year that went by. Diesel rates were at their lowest since March.
