MUMBAI: A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act court convicted and sentenced a 48-year-man to life imprisonment for brutally raping a seven-year-old girl in his neighbourhood in 2014.
The accused, a scrap dealer, left the child severely injured and bleeding, requiring her to undergo surgery. Refusing to grant any leniency to the accused, the court said he was remorseless. The accused was also asked to pay Rs 50,000 compensation.
The incident took place on August 16, 2014. While the girl’s parents went away to work, she was alone at home. Her grandmother lived in the neighbouring street. She further stated the accused then sexually assaulted her.
The child said soon after, her brother arrived and started knocking the door. She said the accused opened the door and fled. Her brother saw her bleeding and rushed to call their grandmother. She said soon after, her grandmother and maternal uncle arrived. The police, too, arrived at the spot and her grandmother informed them about the incident.
