AMBALA: The protesting sugarcane farmers on Thursday continued sitting on the weighing scale of the Naraingarh Sugar Mill, pressing for action against the mill owner and demanding pending payments. On Wednesday, the farmers were promised a meeting at 3 pm on Thursday with state minister Nayab Singh Saini, cane commissioner and the mill owner.

Naraingarh sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Aditi reached the protest site to inform that a meeting was called-in at the Haryana agriculture minister O P Dhankar’s residence in Chandigarh at 2.30 pm. The farmers selected four members to represent themselves at the meeting — Bharatiya Kisan Union state president Gurnam Singh Charuni, Kisan Ganna Sangharsh Samiti state president Rampal Chahal, Kisan Sangharsh Samiti president Vinod Rana and BKU district president Malkiat Singh Sahibpura.

SDM Aditi while talking to TOI, said, “After the output of the meeting held at agriculture minister O P Dhankar’s residence in Chandigarh, the farmers will lift the protest from the Naraingarh Sugar Mill and its operations will resume.


The meeting was held between the four leaders of the farmers, sugar mill chairman Rahul Anand, senior vice president A K Mittal, cane commissioner and the state minister Nayab Singh Saini.


During the meeting it was finalized that the mill would clear the pending dues of the farmers from last season of 2017-18 by January 10. The government has already released the subsidy of Rs 11 crore to the mill owner, which would be released to the farmers by Friday. For the present season of 2018-19, from January 10 onwards, the mill would release a payment of Rs 1.5 crore everyday to the farmers.”


BKU press release adds, “From March 31 onwards, the additional payment of Rs 3 crore monthly will be made by the mill, which will be earned after the electricity generation.”
