CHENNAI: A day after a five-year-old boy was kidnapped near a Tasmac shop in Kancheepuram and then rescued, police arrested a 40-year-old construction worker in connection with the case.
Police identified the man as Marimuthu, of Trichy, who worked at a construction site at Oragadam.
On Wednesday, Guruprasad had taken his son Kumaraguru to the Tasmac shop and had asked him to wait outside. But he passed out abandoning the boy. When Guruprasad woke up in the evening, he found his son missing. After searching for him, he lodged a police complaint.
Police found CCTV camera footage in which the boy was seen being taken by a man in white dhoti. Police received information about the child being kept at a house in Thirumullaivoyal and rescued him. Investigations revealed that Marimuthu saw the boy standing near the shop. After observing him for a couple of minutes and ensuring that nobody was around, he lured Kumaraguru with a chocolate and promised to take him to his mother.
Police said Marimuthu took the child to his residence where neighbours grew suspicious and questioned him. He told them that Kumaraguru was a relative’s son, but since they alerted his family members who live in Tiruvannamalai, Marimuthu escaped leaving the child behind. Police arrested him from a bus stop nearby.
“Marimuthu decided to bring up the child since he lived alone,” said an investigating officer.
