The third edition of The Madurai Marathon, organised by Devadoss Hospital, will happen here on Sunday with the theme of ‘Challenge yourself.’

Addressing the media here on Friday, Sathish Devadoss, Medical Director of the hospital, said the theme was chosen to encourage people to come out of their routine, mundane lifestyle and to challenge themselves physically and mentally.

The marathon will have three different distances — 21 kilometre for men, 10.5 kilometre for women, and five kilometre for kids and fun runners. First prize will be ₹ 50,000, second prize will be ₹ 30,000 and third prize will be ₹ 30,000. All the prizes will be 50 % in cash and the remaining half as gifts.

“We have attractive prizes this year, including diamond jewellery for the three winners in women’s category,” he said.

For the first time, Dr. Sathish said that microchip timer devices will be attached to runners participating in the 21 kilometre and 10.5 kilometre runs that will enable precise recording of timings, live results, issuance of digital certificates, and a 20 seconds video recording for all runners at finish line.

Stating that the marathon, which happens on the first Sunday of every year, was gradually becoming an identity of Madurai city similar to marathons associated with other major cities, Dr. Sathish expressed hope that the participation this year will also cross 2,000.
