KOLKATA: The first and ‘most difficult’ phase of dismantling of Majerhat Bridge over the railway tracks will start this weekend with railways granting power and traffic block for 40 hours, truncating the services of 12 trains on Saturday and 24 trains on Sunday. Movement of all goods trains to and from Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) and New Alipore goods yard will remain suspended from 2pm on January 5 (Saturday) to 6am on January 7 (Monday). Services on Sealdah-Budge Budge section, however, won’t be affected.

Eastern Railway has already engaged superior technologies like robotic drill machine and diamond cutter to reduce noise and vibration during the operation. The work on Saturday and Sunday involves removal concrete girder and beams. This will necessitate 14 hours of engineering works, 27 hours of crane works and 21 hours of traction-distribution work.

Eastern Railway has divided the width of Majerhat railway yard into four spans. It will take 36-40 hours of traffic and power block for four weekends to complete the task and the state has sanctioned Rs 10 crore to dismantle this portion of the bridge. The state wants the construction of new Majerhat Bridge to start as early as possible.

The completion deadline for the new Majerhat Bridge is likely to be delayed by four months. The initial completion deadline of September 2019 may be pushed back to January 2020. On Monday, the state finance department had sanctioned Rs 170 crore for the construction of the cable-stayed bridge, allowing a Haryana-based company that will construct the bridge to start their work from January end.
