No decision has been taken regarding the ₹2,000 currency note, Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg said. on Friday, seeking to dispel rumours that the government had asked the Reserve Bank of India to reduce the printing of these notes.
“Printing of notes is planned as per the projected requirement,” Mr. Garg tweeted. “We have more than adequate notes of ₹2,000 in the system with over 35% of notes by value in circulation being of ₹2,000. There has been no decision regarding 2,000 rupee note production recently.”
The clarification follows media reports on Thursday quoting an unnamed Finance Ministry official saying the government has decided to keep the printing of the ₹2,000 notes to the minimum.
