The city police busted an inter-state gang on Thursday and arrested four men including the gang leader. The men are expert key makers and would target houses in posh localities.

Posing as key makers, they would enter a house to open a case or almirah, while they would start chatting with the owners while one of them would open the lock and take the valuables from the safe.

In the past four months the gang has committed five thefts in this fashion. The police is now questioning them about the jewellers to whom the stolen jewellery has been sold off to.

The arrest in the matter has been made by Chitrakoot police. “Over the past few months there had been a few incidents of men posing as key makers committing thefts in houses in Chitrakoot and Jhotwara areas. To investigate the matter and make arrests, a special team was formed under supervision of senior officials,” cops said.

While investigating, the police team started developing information from sources and learnt about movement of a gang in and out of the city.

“Apart from information from sources, technical investigation was also conducted which revealed important information and thus we were able to bust the gang and nab four men. They have been identified as Nanak Singh, 26, Rahul Barnala, 21, Deepak Bhatia, 20, and Sher Singh, 23. Nanak Singh is their leader and they are natives of Madhya Pradesh,” officials said.

During primary investigation, the cops learnt that  the men have committed three thefts in past three months in the city. “One theft has been committed in sector 10 of Chitrakoot on October 5, where the men took jewellery worth Rs2.5 lakh. Another theft was committed on the same day in Jhotwara where they fled with gold and silver jewellery while third theft was committed by them at Mahesh Nagar area on September 23. Apart from this, they committed a theft in December last year in Ghaziabad and one theft in Chandigarh nearly five months back. We are trying to find from them about other thefts that they have committed,” officials said.

These men would then distribute cash equally amongst themselves while they would sell the jewellery to jewellers in Khargon and Manawar towns.
