HYDERABAD: Civic officials are using satellite images to identify unassessed properties in Moosapet on a pilot basis. If the project becomes successful and replicated across Greater Hyderabad, the officials expect an additional ₹400 crore revenue.
“In Moosapet alone, we were able to identify 9,560 unassessed properties. Once all the properties are assessed in the city, we can generate 30% more revenue from property tax,” Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) additional commissioner (IT wing) Md Musharraf Ali Faruqui told TOI.
In Moosapet circle, there are 67,365 properties. Of them, 57,836 were residential, 6,992 commercial and 2,537 mixed ( both residential and commercial). When the survey was being done progress, properties were marked with different colours in the satellite image based on whether they were assessed or not.
Once the survey is completed, each area would have a map marking properties. Once the properties not assessed were identified, the civic official would send bill collectors and serve notices on property owners asking them to pay property tax.
A top civic official claimed the GHMC could generate over ₹100 crore revenue from Old City alone.
“Officials do not act strict on property tax defaulters in Charminar zone. People live in mansion-like houses and mint money by leasing out properties in prime locations. However they do not pay property tax,” the official said. “The revenue generated there can be used for roads, lights, development of parks and other public amenities,” he added.
Sources said interference of politicians and political parties was also one of the reasons for officials not acting tough on people not paying property tax in the Old City.
In GHMC limits, there are 15.57 lakh properties, including 13.26 lakh residential, 2.05 lakh commercial and 0.26 lakh mixed-use properties. In the 2017-18 financial year, the civic body had raked in ₹1326.80 crore from property tax alone.
Sources said GHMC commissioner M Dana Kishore has instructed officials to collect ₹250 crore property tax in January.
