JORHAT: Seven activists of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on Wednesday launched an indefinite hunger strike at Jorhat in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. KMSS said they are ready for making the ultimate sacrifice unless their demands are met.
The activists are KMSS's Jorhat unit president Mridul Borah, joint secretary Arindam Gogoi, members Kamal Saikia, Barun Lahon, Gunin Dutta, Dwipen Buragohain, Dudumoni Mahanta and Chah Shramik Mukti Sangram Samiti Jorhat district unit president Sareklal Jha.
All amendments moved by the opposition in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of the bill, which seeks to grant Indian nationality to people belonging to minority communities in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, were defeated on Monday. The bill is expected to be presented in the Lok Sabha in it's original form soon.
The farmers' body staged a protest in front of the Jorhat DC office here from 11 AM on Wednesday. Representatives of several other organisations have also joined the protest, demanding withdrawal of the bill at the earliest.
The Jorhat district unit president of KMSS, Mridul Borah, said, "We asked the government to withdraw the bill for the greater interest of the indigenous people of Assam. If the bill is passed, it will nullify the provisions of the historic Assam Accord and will pose a threat to the identity of indigenous people in the state."
He added, "We are ready to make the ultimate sacrifice if our demands are not addressed. Our protest against the bill will continue. We appeal to all the people in the state to join hands against the proposed legislation."
