JALANDHAR: The three victims of November 1984 massacre of Sikhs, one complainant and two witnesses against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who called on the Prime Minister on Wednesday, urged him to fast track all the remaining cases of November 1984 riots. They also demanded that former Union minister Jagdish Tytler and now Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath be investigated properly and prosecuted for their alleged role in the massacre.
The anti-Sikh riot victims, who met the Prime Minister ahead of his visit to Gurdaspur in Punjab on Thursday, included Bibi Jagdish Kaur, complainant against Sajjan Kumar, and witnesses Nirpreet Kaur and Jagsher Singh, whose kin were killed by the murderous mob led by the Congress leader. They also demanded that name of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi be removed from places and institutions named after him as Sajjan’s conviction proved beyond doubt that the 1984 riots had the political patronage of Congress government of that time.
“Apart from the removal of Rajiv Gandhi’s name, we also demanded that an FIR be registered against him, even though he is now dead, and his role investigated thoroughly to expose the political patronage and involvement (of Congress leaders) in the biggest massacre in the country after independence,” Nirpreet told TOI over phone from Delhi.
She said during their 20-minute long meeting with the PM, “we three” did most of the talking. “We demanded that there should be no further delay in the cases of massacre of Sikhs and all cases should be fast tracked so that other victims also get justice. Tytler and Kamal Nath should also be investigated thoroughly without any delay, and prosecuted,” she said.
The three riot victims also raised the issue of security of their families. “Our security was scaled down over two years back. Now that Sajjan has gone to jail, the threat to our families and children has increased and we flagged this issue in our conversation with the PM,” she added.
“He told us that he was proud of our courage for fighting for justice for 34 long years despite all the adversities,” Nirpreet said.
It is learnt that Kaur told the PM that, “For 34 years, I had this feeling that India is not our country. But now I feel some justice is there for us too.” Others who accompanied the victims were SAD president Sukhbir Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Badal, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal.
