AHMEDABAD: With the family of PSI Devendra Rathod (Thakur), 35, who committed suicide by shooting himself, threatening to leave Gujarat if justice was denied, city crime branch late on Thursday evening registered an FIR under sections of sodomy and abetment to suicide against the assistant director of the Karai Police Training Academy, DSP N P Patel.
Crime branch officials said ACP Bhagirathsinh Gohil and ACP C N Rajput personally visited Rathod’s house and recorded the FIR lodged by Devendra’s father Satyendra Thakur, resident of Rajyog Row House in Chandlodia. Thakur hails from Haidarpur of Uttar Pradesh.

Thakur — a retired class one officer in the education department has mentioned in the FIR that Rathod’s wife Dimple and their 3-year-old daughter Pal should be given social assistance and that his son who had done his BEIT Engineering and stood first in the selection process should get a ceremonial farewell salute.

Rathod, an under-training PSI at Karai Police Training Academy had shot himself on December 31. “He had left a suicide note behind alleging that assistant director N P Patel used to torture him mentally and even made sexual demands after calling him to his office,” said an investigator.

Thakur has said in his complaint that his daughter-in-law Dimple had mentioned in her statement recorded on January 1, that Rathod had told her about the sexual harassment by Patel. “Thakur has mentioned in the FIR that Patel should immediately be suspended. He has said that city police chief A K Singh has assured them of a just and impartial probe,” a crime branch official said.

Only after the FIR was registered by crime branch, the family agreed to receive Rathod’s body which was lying in the morgue for cremation.

A senior crime branch official said they will be recording statements of each person who is directly or indirectly related to the incident and take necessary action.

City police commissioner, A K Singh said, “We are taking the alleged suicide notes as Rathod’s dying declaration.”

Probe into firearm used to commit suicide

Crime branch officials said the revolver with which Rathod shot himself belonged to a relative of Devendra’s in-laws. “We are probing how and why did the firearm — a licensed 32 bore revolver and two cartridges land up with Rathod. An inquiry is being conducted and if needed a separate FIR could be lodged,” said a crime branch official.

‘Our family has served the country for 100 years’

Rajendrasingh Rathod, a family member and a retired army official and resident of Haidarpur in Uttar Pradesh said their family has served the country for 100 years. “If we don’t get justice we will leave Gujarat forever,” he added.

Family demands suicide note through RTI

Rathod’s family has alleged that Sola police have not given them the copy of the suicide note left behind. “We have demanded the note through an RTI application now,” said a family member.

Record statements of batchmates

Rathod’s father Satyendra Thakur has said in the FIR that to know the truth the cops should take statements of Rathod’s batchmates and PSIs who have passed out of the academy.
