An 83-year-old man has been accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at an A-League match days before Christmas.

The teenager told police the elderly man made her feel uncomfortable at a soccer game between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford, on December 23 2018.  

The man allegedly made inappropriate remarks and gestures towards the teenager before advancing and allegedly touching her in a sexual manner.

Officers were told about the alleged sexual assault when the teenager approached them during the match to report the incident. 

Local police recorded the accused's details before he was kicked out of the stadium.

The investigation was then handed to the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad who began inquiries.   

Detectives arrested the 83-year-old man at Wyong Police Station at about 9am on Thursday.

He was charged with intentionally sexually touch child aged 10-16 and intentionally do sexual act with child aged 10-16.

The man was granted bail with strict conditions.

He was banned from Central Coast Stadium and is due to appear at Wyong Local Court on February 13. 

The touching charge is new legislation that was introduced after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
