PUNE: The rural police on Wednesday decided to continue with their confidence-building measures in Koregaon Bhima, Perne and Vadhu Budruk villages besides maintaining adequate security to maintain peace and harmony there.
The police have decided to continue with the vigilance at the victory pillar and Govind Mahar’s samadhi memorial at Vadhu. “Two sub-inspectors and 20 personnel will be stationed at each memorial. Also, two armed platoons (30 personnel) of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) will maintain vigil there,” said Sandeep Pakhale, the additional superintendent of police (Baramti division).
The police have installed CCTV cameras at these historical places. “These are essential to gather intelligence,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
Last year, violence erupted at Perne village during the bicentenary commemoration of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima. One person was killed, while several vehicles of visitors and shops were set on fire by the mob.
The rural police as well as district administration held multiple meetings with various organisations to build confidence and enhance communication among the villagers after the incident.
“All the community organisations and villagers cooperated with us during the commemoration day on Tuesday. These efforts have not only helped us maintain law and order but also send a positive message to the society. This is a good sign for us,” said superintendent of police (rural) Sandeep Patil on Wednesday.
Patil said they would continue the confidence-building measures in these villages. “Next week, we shall conduct meetings with all community organisations, leaders and villagers to listen to their issues. We shall resolve the civic issues such as road and drinking water with the help of the district administration,” he added.
