Drunken driving on December 31 fetches Rs 2.88 lakh in fine

CHANDIGARH: On Wednesday, the judicial magistrate in Chandigarh district court had disposed off 185 challans of drunken driving. Chandigarh police on New Year had challaned 205 persons for drunken driving.


However, 349 challans, including drunken driving, were received in the court out of which 297 were disposed off. Of the total, 205 were that of drunken driving from December 31 night. A fine of Rs 2.88 lakh was collected. The fine imposed on traffic violators ranged from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 mostly.


A lot of chaos and drama was witnessed at the court as the traffic offenders complained that no procedure was followed to dispose off the cases.


On December 31, the traffic police had set up 20 nakas to check drunken driving across the city. Of the 205 vehicles that were impounded, 190 were four wheelers, 13 were two-wheelers and two auto-rickshaws.
