BENGALURU: Three people, including two sisters, were killed and three others sustained injuries when their SUV toppled after hitting a median near Hoskote on the Bengaluru-Kolar highway on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at 2.45am near Mylapura Gate when the family was returning to Bengaluru from West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. The deceased are Sreelatha Kishore, 37, her younger sister Sreelekha, 32, and their cousin Srinadh — all residents of Immadihalli near Whitefield. Sreelatha’s husband Bala Kishore, a software engineer, Yagnajith, 11, and Varshini, 10, survived with injuries. The family had visited their hometown where they celebrated the New Year.

Police suspect the driver was either speeding or had dozed off at the wheel. “Srinadh was driving the black Tata Safari. It hit the median and entered the opposite lane before toppling over several times and landing in a ditch. Both sisters were killed instantly and Srinadh was declared dead in a hospital,” an officer said.

Bala Kishore and the two children escaped with minor injuries and have been admitted to a private hospital.
