Women’s entry in Sabarimala: Anger against Kerala govt boils over in city
tnn | Jan 4, 2019, 00:57 ISTCoimbatore/Tirupur: The city on Thursday witnessed outburst of anger against the Left government in Kerala for allowing two women below 50 years to enter Sabarimala temple with some Hindu outfits going berserk and staging protests.
In one instance, three members belonging to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) damaged the flag poles of CPM and CPI at Varadharajapuram here on Thursday night to mark their protest against the Kerala government. CPM cadres have caught two of them and handed them over to the Singanallur police.
According to an official source, the three-member gang first damaged the CPI’s flagpole at Varadharajapuram and later visited DYFI’s office, where they damaged blood donor club boards and CPM’s flagpole. “The trio also set the CPM’s flag on fire. Meanwhile, CPM cadres noticed the trio and gave them a chase, but in vain,” the source said.
With the help of police, CPM members then traced the address of the VHP members and caught two of them. The remaining one has gone into hiding.
The legal cell of BJP, meanwhile, staged a protest in front of the integrated court complex here condemning the Kerala government for allowing the women of menstruating age group to offer prayers at Sabarimala.
In another instance, Hindu Makkal Katchi cadres besieged the Coimbatore railway junction and attempted to enter the platforms. The city police arrested more than 70 protestors. However, two members managed to enter the platform and staged a protest in front of a locomotive. They were also arrested.
In view of the one-day hartal in Kerala over the issue, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation suspended services to that state. About 25 bus services were cancelled, PTI said in a report quoting police sources.
In Tirupur, Hindu Munnani involved school students in the protest, inviting flak from opposition parties for sowing ‘poison’ in the children’s minds.
