One tonne of plastic products seized in Theni

MADURAI: Over thousand kilograms of banned plastic products have been seized in Theni district in the last two days, after the plastic ban came into effect in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Officials collected Rs 60,000 as fine.

Theni district collector M Pallavi Baldev has constituted 65 committees to conduct searches in shops and commercial establishments. As much as 699 kilograms of banned plastics were seized from shops in the district on Tuesday, and fine of Rs 39,900 imposed on the erring shops.


On Wednesday, 389 kilograms of plastic products were seized and a fine to the tune of Rs 21,900 was collected. The collector has asked the shops to refrain from using the banned plastics, failing which she has warned them of severe action.
