Convincing sancharis and effective portrayals marked Rumya Natraj’s recital

It is a comeback for Rumya after a long break. With the entire family including daughter watching with intent, she presented a well-knit margam at the Mysore Association Auditorium as part of the Shivali festival.

Trained under many gurus of Mumbai and the faculty of Nalanda Nrityakala Mahavidyalaya, Rumya’s repertoire for this programme was choreographed by Malati Agneeswaran, who has 35 years of academic acumen.

In her own capacity as a teacher, Rumya has the experience of conducting workshops on ‘Dance Movement Therapy’ and helping children with special needs.

Opening with Natesha Kavuthuvam in Varali, adi talam, composed by Gangamuthu Annavi, Rumya depicted the poses of Chidambaram Nataraja with ease.

Dandayudhapani Pillai’s Varnam in Vachaspati was taken for detailed delineation. Handling the jatis with crisp movements, she was equally convincing in the sancharis that showed staggering steps, searching eyes and sweaty brows.

Namdeo’s abhang ‘Majhe man rakha’ spread an ambience of devotion, advocating detachment to the mortal world. Javali in ragam Behag, set to Rupaka talam composed by Patnam Subramania Iyer was energetic and Rumya emoted well.

The popular thillana in Dhanasri, Adi talam, composed by Swati Tirunal, was rendered with fluid movements. The recital concluded with a mangalam. Rumya could do complete justice to the pieces chosen for the brief recital.
